Sunday Vestment (2024)

To be Filipino is to have some relation to catholisism. With 4 out of 5 Filipino’s identifying as catholic, the identity of the Filipino is rooted in catholicism. A practice in which is a result of colonialisation, the Philippines in which has been at the sharp end of by the Spanish and the American. This collection explores the relationship between this religious heritage and contemporary identity by examining the presentation within the church, analyzing technical aspects and construction as well as sources of inspiration.

As a second generation immigrant, I do not share the same values that my parents and countrymen have when it comes to religion

yet we still maintain certain Catholic/Christian traditions. Especially as it comes to religious holidays.

This sentiment is shown through the collection as looks take inspiration from institutional wear and art through the use of characters. Avatars in which diferent modes of presentation are seen in the church from rigid uniformity to soft tailoring, to immitation of religious imagery. Maintaining traditions and motifs whether it be through collars, accessories or texture.

In saying this, the I aim to create an evening wear collection inspired by both contemporary and historical couture. The work of designers like Cristóbal Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia, and Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli among many designers that, provide great inspiration. Thus resulting in a collection of layered influence and that speaks to the identity as a Filipino and as a fashion designer.
